As the son of two small business owners, Matt was raised in a middle-class household.  From a young age, he learned the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and determination, and carried these with him when he attended the US Naval Academy for college.  While in school, Matt served as Captain of the Boxing team, then ultimately commissioned as an Officer. While in the Navy, Matt’s leadership skills were quickly recognized and he rose through the ranks.  By the age of 25, he was leading a crew of 150 sailors on Top Secret missions aboard a submarine.

After completing his service, Matt moved to the Triangle.  He followed in his family’s entrepreneurial footsteps by going to work helping grow local technology businesses, including RelyMD, a Raleigh-based company designed to lower healthcare costs and increase access for NC patients.

Matt’s wife, Liz, works as a physician in the Raleigh area, focusing on improving women’s health.  Matt and Liz have two young daughters, McCall and Kate.  Together they juggle the responsibilities of parenthood, career, and marriage.

Matt decided to run for NC Senate because he felt that our politicians are not honestly addressing the problems faced by North Carolinians and not honoring and protecting our democratic process.
